COURT HOUSE – Freeholder Director Daniel Beyel announced that the Cape May County Zoo has two new additions. It was April Fools Day – but it wasn’t a joke, two Ring-tailed lemurs were born on April 1, 2011 at the 85 acre free zoo. The lemurs, whose genders are not yet known, were born to mom “Lily” and dad “Sal”. These are the 4th and 5th infants for Lily & Sal in four years.
With the new baby there are now a total of eight Lemurs at the zoo which has more than 250 species and over 500 animals. The Lemurs at the Cape May County Zoo can be viewed at their exhibit in the African Savanna.
Traditionally the Ring-tailed Lemur can be found in scrub forests and spiny dessert areas throughout Madagascar. The Ring-tailed Lemur has a captive lifespan of approximately twenty-seven years. In the wild, their numbers are declining due to continuous deforestation. They are Herbivores – eating mostly fruit and leaves. Their long black and white ringed tail is used as a marker as they move around to allow the troop to follow one another.
Visit the Lemurs and all their friends at the Cape May County Zoo from 10 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. daily. The Cape May County Zoo is located at 707 Route 9 North in Cape May Court House. The free Zoo is open, weather permitting, 364 days a year – closed on Christmas Day. For additional information please call 463-6678 or visit capemaycountygov.net.
