Aviation Fuel Available, No Jet Fuel As Search for FBO Continues

ERMA – The majority of Cape May County tourists have no problem getting gas for their drive to the shore. For a minority, who pilot their personal propeller-driven planes, getting aviation gas once they land is no problem. But, if they fly a jet into Cape May County Airport, they won’t find jet fuel.
That’s because there is still no fixed-base operator at the airport owned by the county and operated by the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA).
Freeholder Will Morey, a licensed, commercial rated pilot, certified flight instructor and a volunteer pilot with the Angel Flight Network since 2007, has that discrepancy on his “to do” agenda, and has met with Scott A. Green, DRBA executive director about the problem.
Morey told the Herald that Green is “going full steam ahead working to get a fixed base operator at the airport.”
He said the authority is “moving to restore Jet A fuel and also settle an arrangement with an FBO to restore some service” for transient general aviation pilots.
Many such pilots own property in the county and routinely fly in to check on it and stay a few days, then fly home.
Morey said there are “indications they are working at the highest levels” to get a fixed base operator at the airport as soon as possible.
“The good news is, the DRBA agrees with us,” Morey said. “As of April 2, there is a new executive director at DRBA who is open and responsive. We are getting his full attention,” Morey concluded.
According to the airport’s website, it logs approximately 39,000 airplane and helicopter takeoffs and landings annually, primarily during May through September, peak travel months.
Traffic includes corporate aviation, recreational fliers, charter operators and small-aircraft owners.
