Avalon’s CRS Rating

By Vince Conti

AVALON – Avalon is seeking to move its Community Rating System (CRS) rating class from 5 to 4. The rating move would add to the discount borough homeowners receive on federal flood insurance, bringing the discount from the current 25 percent to 30 percent. At the Nov. 8 meeting of Borough Council, the borough entered a program to have Stockton University’s Coastal Research Center aid in the development of a Storm Water Management Plan. That is a component of a Watershed Management Plan which is a requirement for Class 4 status, according to Dr. Stewart Farrell, Coastal Research Center’s director.
Avalon entered the Community Rating System in 1996 and was the first municipality in the county to achieve a Class 5 status.
