Avalon Secures $160,000 Grant for Reconstruction of 35th Street

By Press Release

AVALON — For the second consecutive year the Borough of Avalon has secured a state grant for the reconstruction of a Borough street. Avalon has been awarded a $160,000 Municipal Aid grant from the State of New Jersey for the reconstruction of 35th Street between Dune Drive and First Avenue. This is the second consecutive year the Borough has secured a state grant for municipal street work. In 2017, Avalon received a state grant for the reconstruction of a portion of 39th Street totaling $180,343; that project is currently underway.
To date, the Borough has received $2.5 million in Municipal Aid grant funding from the New Jersey Department of Transportation since 1997.
“I want to thank the state for taking a careful look at Avalon’s application in this grant program and supporting the Borough for two consecutive years”, said Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi. “Our Council and administration pays careful attention to every grant opportunity that can help finance necessary improvement projects in the Borough. These diligent efforts have resulted in more than $340,000 in just two years for grants for street improvements that would have been financed through municipal taxes”.
The Borough of Avalon works with its engineering firm of Mott MacDonald to pursue Municipal Aid grant awards through the NJDOT. The Borough annually evaluates the conditions of its streets and makes applications through this state program for the municipal streets that are in most need of repairs. 35th Street was chosen due to the worsening condition of the road surface due to aging and other factors.
Under the Municipal Aid grant program, each county is apportioned a share of the total funding based on population and the number of local centerline miles.
532 municipalities submitted grant applications during this funding cycle. The resurfacing of this street will likely be conducted either in the Fall, 2018 or Spring, 2019.
