AVALON – Avalon will designate its Senior Center as a warming center during Code Blue alerts.
Assistant Business Administrator James Waldron explained to Borough Council Jan. 9 that recent changes required municipalities to create warming centers for the homeless during Code Blue alerts. The county, which had previously provided motel vouchers for homeless individuals during such alerts, will no longer do so except in the case of families with children.
Avalon has no known homeless population, but Waldron said that the designation of a facility would be useful on an occasion where an Avalon resident loses heat and needs a temporary refuge.
Municipal warming centers must be available 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Waldron said. He added that the Senior Center was chosen because it has bathroom facilities, is secure and is close to the public safety building, allowing for easy police patrol.
Stone Harbor Mayor Judith Davies-Dunhour confirmed that Stone Harbor is seeking a relationship in which the boroughs could share in the use of the Avalon Senior Center.
