AVALON – Avalon Borough Councilman Richard Dean submitted his letter of resignation from Borough Council effective Nov. 30, 2018.
According to a release, Dean cited recent health issues as his reason for stepping down from the office he has held continuously since 1987. His letter was read into the record by Avalon Business Administrator Scott Wahl at the Nov. 20 meeting of borough council.
“For the past year my health has prevented my full participation in the business of Avalon, and I fully expected with encouragement from my doctors that my health improve to the point that I would be able to resume my full-time duties,” Dean wrote. “It has recently become clear, however, that this is not to be the case…I regret that I will not be able to finish our my current term and I thank you, my fellow members of Borough Council, Mayor Marty Pagliughi, and the Borough Administration for standing by me during my infirmity and rehabilitation”.
Dean is a lifelong resident of Cape May County and has lived in Avalon since he was 4 years old. He joined the Army where he served two years of active duty, and four years in the reserves.
Dean is a lifetime member of the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department with nearly 60 years of volunteer service; he served as chief of the department for 21 years and remains a member of the New Jersey State Fireman’s Association.
“Dick Dean has left a legacy of public service in the Borough of Avalon for which the public will benefit for generations to come,” stated Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi. “Dick has been very active in some of the most important projects in Avalon’s history and is directly responsible for many quality of life and resiliency initiatives that make the Borough one of the premier residential and vacation destinations along the East Coast.”
Dean has served multiple times as the President of the Avalon Borough Council, and has longtime service on various committees, including Public Safety, Public Works, and Planning/Zoning. He traveled numerous times to Washington on behalf of the Borough to bring various dune and beach projects to fruition.
Per state statute, Borough Council may make an appointment to fill the remainder of Dean’s term on council which expires June 30, 2019.
The appointment must be made within a 30-day window.
The final Avalon Borough Council meeting of 2018 will be held Dec. 12 at 4 p.m. at Avalon Borough Hall.
