Avalon Council Names Charles Covington Council President

AVALON – The Avalon Borough Council held its reorganization meeting July 1 and unanimously selected longtime Councilman Charles Covington to serve as Council President for a one year term. Council also selected Councilman Richard Dean to serve as Council Vice President.
Covington was first elected to the Avalon Borough Council in 1991 and has been very active in various committees including Revenue and Finance, Recreation, Insurance, and Technology. He serves as Council’s liaison to the Avalon Free Public Library and is active in many organizations including the Avalon Lions Club, the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for the Blind, and the Avalon Senior Citizens Organization.
Dean is a lifetime resident of Cape May County and joined the United States Army in 1958 where he served two years of active duty and four years in the reserves. Dean was first elected to the Avalon Borough Council in 1987 and has served in the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years, including service as Chief for 21 years. Dean has been involved in many committees including Public Safety, Public Works, and Planning/Zoning.
Borough Council also appointed Scott Wahl as the new Business Administrator for Avalon. Wahl replaces Andrew Bednarek who served Avalon for 30 years before his retirement June 30, 2014. Wahl also will continue to serve as the Public Information Officer for Avalon.
Mayor Martin Pagliughi swore in Denise Rech as the new Deputy Municipal Clerk for Avalon. Marie Hood was also named as the Municipal Registrar of Vital Statistics for the Borough.
The next meeting of the Avalon Borough Council will be July 9, at 7:00 p.m.
