Avalon Beachfront to Reopen This Weekend After Emergency Replenishment

By Press Release

AVALON– Avalon’s emergency beach fill project entered its final stages on Thursday, June 24th. Engineers with Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company reported that as of 9:00am Thursday, only 8,000 cubic yards of sand needed to be pumped onto the Avalon beachfront. The pumping operation is slated to conclude at beaches between 24th and 26th Streets as of noontime on Thursday.
Great Lakes continued to work ahead of schedule on the project due to favorable weather conditions and no major mechanical interruptions. By contract, the beach fill project had to conclude by July 1st. Sand pumping operations will now conclude about one week ahead of schedule. The 24 hour a day, seven day a week project will result in a brand new beachfront for Avalon between 9th and 26th streets.
After the final sand amounts are pumped Thursday morning, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company will immediately begin to grade the beachfront for safety and will remove its heavy equipment from Avalon’s north end beaches. The company informed Avalon officials on Thursday that most of the north end beaches will be accessible and open to the public by Saturday, and all of the beaches will be open on Sunday. All of the equipment will be off the Avalon beachfront by the conclusion of the weekend. It should take 2-3 days to remove all of the heavy equipment from the Avalon beachfront.
The Avalon Department of Public Works is also creating new, safe beach paths in the project area. Public Works crews continue to put in new beach paths to improve access to the beaches.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has agreed to reimburse Avalon for 75 percent of the costs associated with the beach fill project. Avalon partnered with Sea Isle City on this emergency beach fill project after repeated storms in the Fall/Winter of 2009-’10 damaged the New Jersey coastline.
