Avalon Bans Plastic Bags

By Vince Conti

AVALON – The Avalon Borough Council adopted an ordinance Sept. 12 that bans the use of plastic bags and other items deemed “to constitute a threat to the environment.”  The ban on single-use plastic, polystyrene foam products and non-compostable food packaging goes into effect June 1, 2019.
In an effort to reduce potential confusion for residents and visitors to Seven Mile Island, Avalon’s ordinance was drafted in consultation with neighboring Stone Harbor which adopted similar rules effective on the same date.
The municipal ban comes as Gov. Phil Murphy vetoed a state bill that would have established a proposed fee on single-use plastic shopping bags. The governor said the bill did not go far enough to address the “over reliance on plastic bags.”
