Atlantic and Cape May Vicinage to Hold Opening of the Courts Ceremony

COURT HOUSE – The Atlantic and Cape May Vicinage and the Atlantic and Cape May County bar associations will hold the annual Opening of the Courts and Memorial Service Ceremony on Sept. 3 at 8:45 a.m. in ceremonial Courtroom 3A, East Wing, 1201 Bacharach Blvd., Atlantic City.
The ceremony marks the traditional start of the court year, provides an opportunity to share memories, and recognizes the accomplishments of members of the legal profession, staff and the Judiciary who passed away during the previous year.
The Opening of the Courts ceremony is a tradition that began when the court would recess in the summer and reopen in Sept. although the courts no longer close for the summer, the tradition has been renewed to acknowledge and celebrate the new court year.
“The Opening of the Courts ceremony gives us the opportunity to start another court year by reflecting on the importance of our work and the fine people who dedicated their careers to the administration of justice with dignity and integrity,” said Assignment Judge Julio L. Mendez.
The event will honor the careers of the following members of the Atlantic and Cape May County legal community and Judiciary staff who passed away this year:
Superior Court Judge Charles “Sandy” Middlesworth
Workers’ Compensation Judge Jose “Joe” A. LaBoy
Municipal Court Judge Kenneth Calloway
Municipal Court Judge F. Frederick Perone
Attorney Stewart “Skip” Kay
Attorney Clarence Mattioli
Attorney Joseph P. Murray
Stephanie Murrell, senior probation officer
Mary Baskerville, court aide
