By Lenora Boninfante

County Clerk Rita Marie Fulginiti along with Diana Hevener of the County Clerk’s Office are co-chairs of local arrangements for the Spring Meeting of the Mid Atlantic Regional Archives Conference April 12-14 at Congress Hall, the headquarters hotel.
“313 attendees have registered to the “Faith, Frolic and Fundamentals” Spring Meeting of the Mid Atlantic Regional Archives Conference. Our attendees are coming from archives and libraries from major colleges, universities, religious institutions and government archives located in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. “We are at maximum attendance for the most popular sessions. Rooms at Congress Hall filled up almost immediately and attendees are lodging throughout the city.” Fulginiti said. “We knew MARAC membership would love Cape May when we presented the venue to them last October 22nd at their business meeting in Bethlehem, PA. Members were simply enchanted by the history, the natural beauty and the Southern New Jersey hospitality of Cape May.” Fulginiti said.
Cape May Mayor Dr. Edward J. Mahanney, Jr. will officially welcome MARAC to Cape May at the opening Plenary Session on Friday, April 13 at 9:00 a.m. leading into a keynote address by author Joan Berkey of Dennis Township entitled “Archives and the Architectural Historian.” Friday’s luncheon program will feature another local historian Michael Conley, also of Dennis Township, who will entertain and enlighten the group with “Politics, Booze and Scandal – Cape May County During Prohibition.”
On Saturday Congress Hall owner Curtis Bashaw of Cape May will participate in a workshop entitled “Rescuing and Making Available a Controversial Collection: The Carl McIntire Papers at Princeton Theological Seminary.” McIntire, a fiery fundamentalist radio preacher and staunch anti-communist political activist was Bashaw’s grandfather. Also on Saturday Southern New Jersey Author Nelson Johnson will participate in a panel discussion “From the Pages of History to the Screen: The Role of Archives in HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire’.”
“I am delighted to be able to introduce Cape May for the first time to many of my colleagues from the Northeast. Many have come early and will stay for a while to enjoy all there is to offer in Cape May County.” Laurie Thomas from the Cape May Historical Society will be directing tours and free time activities for the event.
