AP: No Social Security Cost of Living Increase Again This Year

WASHINGTON, D.C. — An Associated Press article reports that for the second consecutive year there will be no cost of living increase in Social Security payments. These are the only two years in which this happened, and that’s because inflation has been absent.
The article speculates that Democrats will be blamed, but one suspects that most recipients are aware, or will be made aware during discussions, that whether there will be an increase in a given year depends on a formula adopted 35 years ago, and the government has no leeway for adjustments.
