Animal Shelter Will Go to ‘Pits’ in July Thanks to Donation

By Al Campbell

CREST HAVEN — In July it will be all about the pits…pit bulls that is, at the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center.
There will be free microchipping for owned pitbulls and pitbull mixes for Cape May County residents. There will also be free spay/neuter for owned pitbulls and pitbull mixes for Cape May County residents. Proof of residency will be required for both.
And, to help find more homes for the breed, there will be 50 reduction on adoptions of pitbull and pitbull mixes from the shelter, 110 Shelter Road, just north of Moore Road past the County Prosecutor’s building.
The shelter’s fees normally are $95 for dogs under 5 years of age and $35 for dogs over that age.
Adoption includes: spay or neuter procedure, microchipping with lifetime registration with Home Again, heart worm testing, vaccines against rabies, distemper and bordatella, free vet visit within 30 days of the adoption, two free baths at participating groomers and coupons worth $190 from PetSmart.
On June 12, Freeholder Leonard Desiderio, liaison to the shelter, and the board accepted a $2,000 check from Lissy Holroyd of the Paws and Claws Society at their meeting.
The donation will be used to support spay and neutering of pit bulls at the Shelter and Adoption Center. Pit Bulls make up the largest percentage of dogs available for adoption there.
The Shelter and Adoption Center will host a “Pit-ty Party” to promote adoption of pit bulls during July, which is National Adopt a Dog Month.
“We are pleased to accept this donation from the PAWS and Claws Society to support our programs at the animal shelter,” Desiderio stated. “Throughout the year we focus on finding homes for the pets at the shelter and programs like this that provide free spay and neutering encourage adoptions,” he stated.
Currently, the Shelter and Adoption Center is offering half off cat adoptions in honor of June being National Adopt a Cat Month. There are over 175 cats available for adoption, according to Judy Davies-Dunhour, manager.
