TRENTON — First District Assemblyman Nelson T. Albano Monday, March 9 was named the new chairman of the Assembly Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.
Albano, of Vineland, replaces Douglas H. Fisher, who resigned from the Assembly to become the state’s Secretary of Agriculture. Albano has been the committee’s vice chairman, according to a release.
Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts, Jr. cited Albano’s strong advocacy for the agricultural community in naming him committee chairman.
He also noted Albano’s lifelong ties to Cumberland County, which is known as New Jersey’s “Garden Spot” and ranks number one in the state for vegetable, melon, potato, greenhouse, floriculture and sod production.
“Assemblyman Albano’s vast knowledge of the issues important to farmers and his consistently strong advocacy for New Jersey’s agricultural community make him a clear choice to guide this committee,” said Roberts. “Nelson has quickly earned a reputation as one of the hardest-working and smartest legislators. He’s already a proven leader and will undoubtedly serve New Jersey and its farmers well in this new role.”
“Agriculture is our heritage and is crucial to our economic well-being, yet our farmers face constant pressures in the nation’s most densely populated state,” Albano said in a release. “Whether it is preserving farmland and open space, protecting the right to farm, ensuring quality water resources or promoting Jersey produce, New Jersey farmers need constant advocacy. That’s what I’ve done and I plan to step it up even more in my new role as we guide our agricultural community through this global economic recession and other challenges.”
The Assembly Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee is responsible for monitoring issues that affect parks, farmland preservation, water resources and the growing agricultural industry.
(MORE) Albano has served in the Assembly since 2006. A member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union for nearly 30 years, Albano is the shop steward at Village Supermarkets in Vineland.
While in the Assembly, Albano has crusaded for tougher state laws against drunk drivers and has been a strong advocate for worker rights.
Albano represents the 1st Legislative District, which includes Buena, Buena Vista and Somers Point in Atlantic County; Maurice River, Millville and Vineland in Cumberland County; and all Cape May County.
