STONE HARBOR – Stone Harbor Borough Council introduced three affordable housing ordinances Sept. 18 meant to bring the borough into compliance with a recent settlement agreement between the borough and the Fair Share Housing Center.
When implemented, the settlement, approved by the courts, will continue the borough’s immunity from builder’s remedy lawsuits and effectively meet its affordable housing obligations until 2025.
The heart of the ordinances introduced is an accessory apartment program that will facilitate the creation of 10 apartment units for moderate and low-income individuals on the second and third floors of commercial structures in the business district from 93rd to 99th streets.
The borough is not obligated to create the apartments, but its zoning will now allow such development if a developer seeks to create them.
