CREST HAVEN – Seven options to rehabilitate or replace Townsend’s Inlet Bridge were presented during Cape May County Bridge Commission’s meeting Oct. 19, The Press of Atlantic City reports.
The cost of the proposed plans, laid out by Greenman-Pedersen Inc., ranged from $20 million to $150 million. Additional expenses are possible.
Officials said they will not be able to get much federal funding because of the cost to replace Ocean City-Lonport Bridge, and a request to replace Middle Thorofare Bridge, connecting Diamond Beach to Cape May.
Chairman Patrick Rosenello said raising tolls on the bridge won’t be enough to replace or renovate it. County bonding is a possibility.
Most of the plans call for multi-year, off-season detours. Only one plan, which calls for building a bridge over the current one, would close the area completely for multiple years.
Officials will need to secure funding and get permits from the state Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prior to starting construction.
The process will take several years, the report continued.
