COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Committee introduced two bond ordinances May 20 totaling $4.5 million.
The first ordinance deals with the 2019 capital improvements. Debt service will be an obligation of the general budget. Two-thirds of the funds appropriated in the ordinance are for the “2019 Roads and Drainage Program.” Other funds are allocated to park improvements, information technology upgrades and police equipment.
The second ordinance is for sewer improvements. Debt service will be an obligation of the sewer utility.
Mayor Timothy Donohue said the $2.5-million bond would provide funds to start the modernization of the sewer system. A large portion of the funds will go to pump station upgrades. “We need to bring our pump stations into the 21st century,” Donohue said.
Efforts to modernize the sewer system are also related to large increases in recent fees from the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA). The old sewer system may be allowing water intrusion that passes as flow to the MUA increasing the fee to the township.
