COURT HOUSE – May 4: The Cape May County Department of Health reported 10 new COVID-19 cases today, along with two new fatalities.
Both deaths were outside of any of the county’s long-term care facilities. They were a 70-year-old man from, Middle Township and a 72-year-old male, from Lower Township. Today’s fatality marks the first death of a Middle Township resident.
With today’s new cases, total cases in the county climbed to 371. Fatalities now stand at 25. The number of active cases rose to 192, with four of the new cases occurring in long-term care facilities in Dennis Township and Woodbine. The number off-quarantine is 154.
The county’s numbers came on the day that Gov. Phil Murphy announced that the state’s public schools would remain closed for the remainder of the academic year. Murphy also reported that total cases in the state grew to 128,269, with 7,910 fatalities.
The state report included only 1,621 new cases and 45 additional fatalities. Murphy cautioned that today’s numbers may be artificially low due to a computer system outage over the weekend. Also, the number of hospitalized patients continued to decline.
