WEST WILDWOOD –The Borough of West Wildwood formally unveiled its 26th Avenue shoreline protection project at a ceremony on July 15. Over 40 people showed up to watch as West Wildwood Mayor Herbert C. Frederick, along with Wildwood Commissioner Peter Byron and North Wildwood Mayor Bill Henfey cut the ceremonial ribbon.
The $1-million project includes a 1,500 foot stretch of new bulkhead as well as new curbing, sidewalks, and the widening of 26th Avenue.
“The 1,500 feet of bulkhead will protect the borough,” said Frederick. “It’s a beautiful, beautiful area.”
Frederick noted the strong relationship between West Wildwood and its sister communities. “We were brought together by fate,” he said, “but we are still together as friends.”
During the engineering portion of the project, prior to construction, an engineer’s report showed the geographic point where West Wildwood, the city of Wildwood, and North Wildwood meet. Five hundred feet east of the bulkhead is where the three municipalities share a common border. As part of the day’s festivities a spike was hammered into the ground where they meet.
“We do a lot of things together,” said Henfey. “And we do them well. We’re looking forward to doing more together.”
“I’ve lived in West Wildwood, North Wildwood, and now I live in Wildwood,” said Byron. “But I always tell people I am from the Wildwoods.”
A permanent stone marker will replace the spike that is being used to mark the place where the Wildwoods meet.
“We share a common border by fate, and a common friendship by choice,” said Frederick. “We do work hard together. This is a great, great day.”
