UPDATED: Fire Destroys S. Dennis Barn, Arson Ruled Out

By Al Campbell

SOUTH DENNIS – Dennis and Middle township firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire at 808 Court House-South Dennis Road at 9:10 a.m. Sat., Feb. 19.
Volunteers from Dennis, Ocean View, Belleplain, Goshen and Court House responded and formed a tanker relay from Dennis Lake. Belleplain Emergency Corps responded with its large van and rescue unit.
Within less than 10 minutes the fire was subdued, but the entire roof of the barn on fire was gone, and firefighters continued to pour water on the smoking remnants and toss out charred material.
State Police at the Woodbine station, who also responded, said when they arrived at 9:14 a.m., the barn, which is located behind a residence, was fully engulfed in flames. Troopers also said three other small storage dwellings on the property sustained fire damage.
Police said there were no injuries.
According to a release issued from the Woodbine station, Dennisville firefighters extinguished the fire with assistance from Belleplain, Goshen, Court House, Ocean View and Woodbine fire companies. Belleplain Emergency Corps also assisted on the scene, the release said.
Traffic on Court House-South Dennis Road was detoured because of the fire.
State Police said arson is not suspected, but added the actual cause of the fire was still undetermined hours after an investigation was conducted by Richard Harron of the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office.
