NORTH WILDWOOD – North Wildwood and Wildwood City Fire Departments were dispatched to 212 W. 17th Street for a reported dwelling fire Nov. 18 at approximately 8:30 p.m.
While en route, dispatch was reporting someone trapped in the building. When firefighters arrived they found the first floor front apartment well involved in fire. A family member was on scene reporting someone trapped in that unit. North Wildwood Engine 2 along with Wildwood City Engine 38 crews made an aggressive interior attack in an attempt to rescue the victim. Firefighters gained entry and began a search. The fire began to extend to the second floor and eventually the attic area. Because of the intensity of the fire, firefighters were unable to locate the victim.
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters discovered the body of Linda Martin, 36, of North Wildwood, in the unit which was well involved in fire upon their arrival.
Units operating on scene were North Wildwood FD, Wildwood City FD, West Wildwood FD and Rio Grande FD. Stone Harbor FD/EMS covered the City of North Wildwood during the incident. Middle Twp. EMS was also on scene and provided coverage for the City of Wildwood during the incident. Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office was on scene investigating. No further injuries were reported. The fire remains under investigation.
American Red Cross responded to a call for assistance following the fire. Red Cross Disaster Staff provided emergency assistance to one displaced adult woman for food, shoes, clothing, seasonal clothing and linens. Temporary lodging was not needed as she is staying with family now.
