UPDATE: Lower Township Police Identify Fire Victim

VILLAS – Lower Township police, in a Jan. 7 release, provided the identity of the person who died in a Jan. 4 house fire.
Melody Murphy was found dead in the upstairs bedroom. According to the Southern Regional Medical Examiner Office, her cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of the fire.
On Jan. 4, at approximately 6:45 a.m., Lower Township Police and fire units were dispatched to the 200 block of East Florida Avenue for a reported structure fire.
Upon arrival, the homeowner Joseph Murphy was outside being attended to by neighbors. He suffered smoke inhalation and other minor injuries.
Police noted that this fire remains an ongoing investigation. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and the Lower Township Police Department.
