ERMA – Two rooms in Cabin City Motel, 756 Route 9 were heavily damaged in a fire reported at about 8:53 a.m. July 17.
When Lower Township police officers arrived, rooms 8 and 9 of the structure were fully engulfed with heavy smoke showing, according to a release.
Patrolman Scheid, SRO Barcas, and Sgt. Smith began to evacuate the motel and the rear cottages. As a safety precaution, Route 9 was closed northbound at Route 109.
Multiple local fire companies with tanker trucks arrived and extinguished the fire, which was declared under control at 10:04 a.m. Several rescue squads arrived to assist.
The owner of the Cabin City Motel, Timothy Lee, was present and provided the officers the name of the tenant of room 8, where the reportedly fire started.
Lower Township Police made contact with the tenant, Robert Schenck, who was on a boat fishing and advised him of the incident.
Schenck arrived on scene and advised the officers that he had left the apartment between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 8 a.m.
The Cape May County Fire Marshal’s office investigated. It is believed the fire was accidental in origin.
All occupants of the motel were offered relocation assistance from the American Red Cross.
There were no injuries reported due the fire.
