DIAS CREEK – Court House Fire Company No. 1 responded to a structure fire at Abri Animal Hospital, located in the first block Route 47 in Dias Creek around 5:15 p.m. June 23.
The fire, which originated in the garage, was contained to the back of the animal hospital, according to Chief Paul Hand.
The fire took 15-20 minutes to put out.
There was no one in the animal hospital at the time of the fire, however, an estimated six to 10 animals (dogs and cats) had to be evacuated. The animals were unharmed, and were transported to another location.
First responders had to go through smoke to get to the animals, said Hand. Two firefighters had smoke inhalation, and one had high blood pressure, and were treated on scene.
Fire companies from Rio Grande, Green Creek, Goshen, and Stone Harbor responded, along with Middle Township Police Department, Cape May County Fire Marshal and Atlantic City Electric.
According to Hand, the cause of the fire was “electrical.”
Traffic was detoured at Route 47 and Dias Creek Road, and also at Route 47 and Hand Avenue while crews worked on scene.
