State Inspection of West Cape May Fire Company Finds No Major Errors

By Jack Fichter

WEST CAPE MAY — West Cape May Volunteer Fire Company passed two state inspections with no major errors cited.
The only notation from the state was some documentation from the fire company is general documentation and procedures rather than specific to West Cape May Volunteer Fire Company, according to Borough Commission Ramsey Geyer.
Public Employees Occupational Safety and Health Department of Labor (PEOSH) spent one day last week going over the fire company’s documentation, equipment and processes. Ramsey said two staffers arrived from the state covering health and safety issues and two others representing the Department of Labor.
The PEOSH staffers examined the fire company personnel’s medical records and inoculation certificates and blood-borne pathogen process procedures training. Geyer said they also examined the borough’s emergency management plan as it relates to the fire company.
The Department of Labor spent a day examining breathing apparatus, checking harnesses, bottles, regulators, facemasks and how they are secured in vehicles.
“They also went over every single piece of turnout gear from the gloves down to bunker pants,” said Geyer.
Every drill the fire company conducts was examined, he said.
Geyer said the fire company has provided all material and documentation requested.
The fire company will receive at least two more visits from the state including an inspection of every piece of fire equipment including operational and maintenance manuals.
Also pending: a complete review of the firehouse as it relates to equipment storage.
Geyer said there was still a “quite a bit of work to do.” He said he expected a report from PEOSH by July 7. He said the borough has to approve the operating procedures of the fire company.
Geyer said the borough cannot tell the fire company how to operate but can set requirements of what it wants accomplished.
