WOODBINE – The New Jersey State Fire Marshal is investigating an explosion at an unoccupied laundry building on the grounds of the Woodbine Developmental Center, Woodbine Fire Chief Clarence Ryan said.
Firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 10. a.m., and immediately requested hazardous materials teams to the scene.
Two units one from Cape May County and one from Cumberland County responded, Ryan said.
The exact cause of the blast is unknown Ryan said but they suspect a buildup of a petroleum based gas that caused the explosion.
A partial section of the roof was lifted in the blast, Ryan said. State building inspectors were called to determine the structural integrity of the building.
Belleplain Emergency Corps responded to the scene to standby and for rehab. No one was injured Ryan said.
