Officers Investigate Fatal Petersburg Fire

PETERSBURG – Troopers from Woodbine Station were detailed to a structure fire on the 100 block of Perry Road April 3 at 12:58 a.m. 

The structure behind the residence was a detached garage apartment and was observed engulfed in flames, according to a release. Residents advised that an elderly family member, approximately 76-years-old, resided in the apartment and was believed to be inside. This family member was identified as Leon Cheesman. Tuckahoe, Marmora, and Seaville fire departments responded to the scene. After the fire was extinguished, human remains were discovered inside the apartment.

According to police, the human remains have not yet been positively identified by the medical examiner, and no official ID has been made at this time.

Responding units included: Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Cape May County Fire Marshall, New Jersey State Police (NJSP) Crime Scene, NJSP Arson and Bomb, Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, NJSP Criminal Investigation Office.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
