SEAVILLE — Residents on Edward Terrace were awakened by an explosion that came from 6 Edward Terrace, according to bystanders at the scene.
“Ka-boom, it shook my whole house, when I looked outside I saw flames,” said a woman who lives next door.
At 3:12 a.m. Thursday, Jan 22, Seaville firefighters were called to the scene and reported a detached garage was fully engulfed with the adjacent home also on fire. Tuckahoe and Marmora Fire Departments were requested to respond.
According to a neighbor, the detached garage housed race cars, “He had racing cars in there, the trailer too, but they’re gone now”. said the woman.
Firefighters worked aggressively as flames spread to the home. The garage portion of the home was heavily damaged in the fire. Firefighters had hose lines entering into the front door of the home.
It took firefighters about 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control. At 6:23 a.m, a radio report stated “we are continuing salvage and overhaul operations at this time.”
The county Fire Marshal was called to the scene. A Cape May County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit was also on scene.
According to State Police Sgt. Dwight Payne, the fire did not appear to be suspicious.
“We have an arson investigator en-route to determine the cause. It’s going to be a while before things cool down so they can go in there, the fire burned very hot, but it looks accidental at this point.”
The Upper Township Rescue Squad and Belleplain Emergency Corps were on standby at the scene.
Ocean View and Somers Point Fire Departments were called to cover Marmora and Seaville fire stations.
The fire is under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshall.
