Multi-Alarm Blaze Burns Woman

By Press Release

WILDWOOD – On May 9, at 1:55 p.m., Wildwood Fire Department Squad Company 3, under the command of Capt. Matt Johnson, was dispatched to Schooner Island Marina, located at 5100 Lake Road.
According to a release, Wildwood Police Department patrolmen arrived on scene and reported that the boat was dry docked in a lot in the 400 West block Leaming Avenue.
Upon arrival, units found a woman who appeared to have jumped from the burning boat, suffering from burns to both of her legs. Chief Daniel Spiegel requested a medic unit and a helicopter for the burn victim, who was treated and flown to Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
The alarm was immediately upgraded to an “all hands” assignment before going to two alarms due to the fire extending to two adjacent boats and a dwelling. Due to the quick actions of the first arriving company, only minor interior damage was sustained to the nearby building.
Units remained on scene assisting the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office with the investigation until 4:43 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Assisting on scene were companies from North Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, Rio Grande, Stone Harbor, and Green Creek. Also on scene were Wildwood Police Department and Wildwood Crest Police Department.
