Lightning Strike Ignites Burleigh Home

BURLEIGH – Firefighters responded to reports of a house fire at 6 Cedar Meadow Drive around 4 a.m. Aug. 21. 
On arrival, firefighters reported smoke showing out of the chimney and door, according to Middle Township Police Captain John Edwards. The residents had already left the house.
The fire was investigated by the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office, who determined lightning hit the chimney and traveled to the basement, causing the fire.
No injuries were reported.
Several fire companies responded, including Cape May Court House and Goshen Volunteer fire companies, and Rio Grande and Green Creek fire companies. Town Bank, Erma and Dennisville Volunteer fire companies and Villas Fire Company responded with tankers, while Stone Harbor Fire Department sent a ladder truck. Middle Township Police Department, Middle Township Ambulance Corp. and Rio Grande Rescue Squad were also on scene.
