Goshen Fire Co. Had Right Man to Stop Major Gas Leak

By Harry B. Scheeler Jr.

GOSHEN– Firefighters were called to the Hideaway Beach Campground on Sunday morning when a fill line broke on a 500 gallon propane tank and the emergency shut off valve failed.
Goshen Fire Department Assistant Chief Frank Svitak was first to arrive on the scene at around 11:15 a.m., and requested the Court House fire department also respond in case the tank ignited, he said.
Campers in the immediate area of the front of the park and around the pool were evacuated and Middle Township police blocked the entrance way to the campground.
Dispatchers placed a call to Modern Gas in Woodbine, the owners of the tank and asked them to respond expeditiously. Svitak said shortly after Goshen firefighter Tom Shaw, Sr, 49, who is also an employee of Modern Gas arrived on the first firetruck and was able to stop the leak.
“It was a big relief to have someone around from the gas company,” Svitak said.
Svitak estimated the tank leaked for fifteen minutes from the time of the initial 9-1-1 call was placed and the time the leak was controlled.
Svitak said no one was injured
