Gas Station Blaze Quickly Extinguished

WILDWOOD – Wildwood City firefighters responded to 325 West Rio Grande Avenue at 4:14 p.m. April 7 for a reported fire at the Riggins Gas Station.
Chief Daniel Speigel arrived, confirmed a working building fire and requested the alarm upgraded to a box alarm.
Quint Company 3, under the command of Capt. James Grauel, arrived, gained entry into the vehicle service area and began fire suppression. Engine Company 2 arrived, secured a water supply and backed up Quint Company 3 with fire suppression, ventilation and searching the building.
The fire was placed under control within 10 minutes after the fire department’s arrival. An employee of the facility was treated on scene for minor burn injuries to his face and smoke inhalation but refused transport.
Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office was on scene conducting an origin and cause investigation. Fire was determined to be accidental as a result of work being completed on a vehicle inside the building. No other injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $5,000. Wildwood Police also assisted on scene.
