BELLEPLAIN – Fire ignited an area of Belleplain State Forest early Sunday morning, prompting response from area firefighters.
The Belleplain Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to the Forest at approximately 6:45 a.m. in the area of the lake for a brush fire, after a park employee arrived for work and found the area engulfed in flames.
The New Jersey State Forest Fire was requested to the scene, and crews battled the blaze for a small time before it was ruled under control. As of 10:00 a.m., crews from the Forest Fire service were still on scene, dousing hot spots.
A Forest Fire Official said that approximately half an acres of wooded area had burnt, most of that being underbrush and small trees. Some larger pine trees were charred, by not severely burnt. He called the cause of the fire “suspicious,” and said that the NJFFS was conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause.
Belleplain Emergency Corps responded to the scene with fire for medical assistance, if needed. The New Jersey State Park Police also responded to the incident.
