WILDWOOD – The Wildwood City Fire Department responded to 111 East Davis Avenue for a reported dwelling fire at 11:04 p.m. May 17. The fire was reported by a subject who walked into the police department.
Engine Company 38, under the command of Captain Ernie Troiano III, along with North Wildwood Fire Department Engine Company 2, arrived and began searching the building and extinguishing the fire. Firefighters found fire showing from a second floor window on arrival. Heavy fire conditions were throughout the second floor. The second floor unit was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The first floor unit was occupied. The occupants self-evacuated prior to the fire departments’ arrival.
Fire units operated on scene for about two and a half hours. There were no reported injuries. Additional fire units on scene were West Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Rio Grande fire departments. Wildwood Crest Fire Department and Wildwood Fire Department Tower 51 responded to an additional five fire calls during this incident, all due to the heavy smoke condition which traveled throughout the city.
The fire remains under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office and the City of Wildwood Fire Department. Damage is estimated at $ 60,000. Fire damage was throughout the second floor, along with smoke and water damage to the first floor.
American Red Cross Southern Shore Chapter also responded to the scene. Volunteer disaster case workers met with a displaced adult female to provide care, comfort and emergency assistance. Assistance provided included food, clothing, transportation and linens. The fire-affected woman is now staying with family members. Referrals to other human service organizations were also provided to assist further with recovery efforts.
