Firefighters Battle Early Morning Dwelling Fire

WILDWOOD – The Wildwood City Fire Department responded to 232 West Maple Avenue for a reported dwelling fire at 3:58 a.m. March 31. Engine 38 and NWFD Engine 2 arrived, confirmed a working fire and requested a general alarm. Chief Christopher D’Amico arrived on scene and assumed command. Firefighters found fire in the crawl space in the rear of the dwelling. The stubborn fire was extinguished after approximately one hour.
The building was occupied at the time of the fire and the occupants from the second floor were able to safely evacuate after their smoke detectors sounded. Fire units operated on scene for about two hours. There were no reported injuries. Additional fire units from Wildwood City FD were on scene assisting in extinguishment and also covered the city.
The fire was investigated by the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office and the City of Wildwood Fire Department, and was determined to be accidental (electrical). Damage is estimated at $15,000.
