Firefighters Battle Cape May Marsh Fire

By Erin Haskell

CAPE MAY – Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a marsh fire on the 1400 block of Missouri Avenue around 3:50 p.m. March 23.
The fire was half a city block, according to Rick Lundholm, deputy chief of the Cape May Fire Department. Five buildings suffered exterior damage, as well as a pick-up truck.
No injuries were reported.
New Jersey Forest Fire Service was summoned to the scene and is investigating.
Fire companies responded from Cape May, West Cape May and the Coast Guard Base. Lower Township Rescue Squad provided coverage for the island.
The fire was under control within a half hour, according to Lundholm.
The cause of the fire is “accidental, not suspicious,” said Lundholm.
