REED’S BEACH – Fire heavily damaged a dwelling at 138 Reed’s Beach Road, Reed’s Beach Feb. 22. The alarm was called into Middle Township Police about 3:48 a.m.
Goshen and Court House fire departments were initially dispatched to the scene. Other departments were quickly summoned for their tankers, from Dennis and Middle townships, since there are no fire hydrants in that rural area of Middle Township. The remote location is near Delaware Bay.
Goshen Fire Chief Joseph Stackhouse reported the structure was fully involved upon his arrival. He also reported that there was a shed, a motorcycle, and two boats on fire.
“You could see the flames from Rt. 47,” said Stackhouse.
There was one person home at the time of the fire. His four dogs alerted him to the fire, and he was able to evacuate, along with the dogs. No injuries were reported, according to Stackhouse.
According to a release, disaster responders from American Red Cross New Jersey Region met with the displaced individual and provided emergency assistance for temporary lodging, food and clothing.
The fire took 45 minutes to get under control, and the scene was officially cleared at 9:54 a.m.
Fire departments from Erma and Villas were summoned to standby in Rio Grande and Green Creek as those companies were at the fire. Middle Township police and emergency medical services responded.
According to Stackhouse, the cause of the fire is “undetermined.” The fire is currently under investigation by the county Fire Marshal.
