ERMA – On Jan. 13, at 7:36 a.m., police, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS) were dispatched to a residence on the 500 block Shunpike Road, in Erma.
Upon arrival, Lower Township police officers found the residence fully engulfed in flames. All occupants were accounted for and out of the house.
Neighboring residents were also requested to evacuate due to the quickly spreading fire, and propane, and natural gas hazards.
All Lower Township fire departments responded, including Erma, Town Bank, and Villas fire companies. Additional fire companies were requested and responded, including Rio Grande, Green Creek, and Court House fire companies.
A span of Shunpike Road was closed for approximately five hours between Breakwater and Tabernacle roads.
Though the building was mostly destroyed by the fire, an excavator was brought to the scene to knock down unstable and hazardous remnants of the structure.
Investigators from the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s office were on scene and are investigating the cause of the fire.
No injuries were reported.
