CAPE MAY – The Cape May Fire Department responded to a call of a structure fire at 924 Washington St. Aug. 13 at about 1 p.m.
According to Fire Chief Alexander Coulter, a crew of eight firefighters arrived on scene at an unoccupied three-story “balloon-framed” Victorian-style home, with smoke spewing from the second and third floors. Fire could be seen from the rear of the structure on the third floor.
Coulter said that off-duty personnel were called to respond to the blaze, and that the crew was able to apply water onto the structure within five minutes of arrival.
A first-alarm assignment was put in place during the call, where the fire department received aid from the U.S. Coast Guard, West Cape May, Erma, and Town Bank fire departments. This is a standard procedure, according to Coulter.
A second alarm call was then placed, due to hot weather conditions. The Lower Township Rescue Squad was called to cover the city for emergency medical services (EMS) calls, and Middle Township EMS was brought on scene to provide a rehab unit for firefighters.
No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation by the Cape May Fire Prevention Bureau, and the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office.
