OCEAN VIEW – A morning fire damaged a portion of the Ocean View Center for Rehabilitation & Continuing Care April 23, Ocean View Vol. Fire Company officials said. One minor injury resulted.
Firefighters were dispatched around 11:15 a.m. for an activated fire alarm, Ocean View V.F.C., Captain Wayne Matthews said. While responding, units were advised that 911 callers were reporting smoke and fire in the ceiling of the building.
Due to the reported fire, Ocean View requested additional manpower to the scene, bringing firefighters from Dennisville, Seaville and Avalon. Firefighters found active fire in the ceiling of the rear portion of the facility, and a smoke condition throughout the building. Nursing facility employees were able to evacuate all facility residents to a safe location, Matthews said.
The fire was brought under control in approximately 10 minutes, but firefighters remained on scene for approximately two hours to clear smoke from the building.
One person was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.
The New Jersey State Police, Belleplain Emergency Corps, Upper Township Rescue Squad, Sea Isle Ambulance Corps, and various state and local health officials also responded to the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by both the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office.
