BURLEIGH — At 8:52 p.m. April 12, a fire was reported in the woods off Indian Trail Road in the vicinity of the former landfill.
At first, Rio Grande firefighters were summoned, but the call then went to Court House firefighters. The road is the dividing line between the two fire districts.
When Middle Township police officers arrived at the scene, they reported that the fire was atop the former landfill, in an area that was secured by locked gates.
It appeared, according to one officer, that the vents from that landfill were feeding the fire.
County Emergency Management was called, and they “reached out” to the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority, which has no connection with the facility, but which has experience with landfill gas.
At 9:08 p.m., a resident from Oyster Road led some emergency workers to the scene.
A police officer reported to dispatchers about 9:15 p.m. that is was “normal” for such gas vents to burn in that fashion.
No further information was available.
