Early Morning Fire Guts Three Units, No Injuries, Six Companies Respond

Early Morning Fire Guts Three Units

By Erin Haskell

CAPE MAY – Cape May City Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire on the 900 block St. James Place around 1 a.m. May 3.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and fire showing in the rear of three town homes, according to Rick Lundholm, deputy chief of the Cape May Fire Department. The fire extended up the back walls and into the roofs for all three units.
The homes suffered “severe heavy damage,” said Lundholm.
Some units were occupied, but no injuries were reported.
It took about an hour to get the fire under control, Lundholm added.
Fire companies from Rio Grande, Green Creek, Wildwood, North Wildwood, West Wildwood and the Coast Guard Base also responded to the scene, along with Lower Township Rescue Squad and an official from Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office. Some fire companies from the northern part of the county provided coverage. The Salvation Army was also notified.
According to Lundholm, Lower Township fire companies were unable to respond as they were on scene of a structure fire in Town Bank around the same time this fire broke out.
The cause of the fire is “under investigation, but did not appear suspicious,” said Lundholm.
