VILLAS – A fire was reported on the 200 Block of East Bates Ave. at 12:44 a.m. Nov. 24. Firefighters from Villas, Erma and Town Bank responded with Green Creek Fire Company acting as the rapid intervention crew (RIC).
“The fire was shelling out from the rear attic of a detached, one story garage,” said Villas Fire Chief Rich Harron.
A driver who happened to be passing by alerted residents of the home to the fire. According to Harron, the driver saw the fire and knocked on the homeowners’ door to wake them up.
The commotion also woke up Jen Tracy, a resident who lives a block away. “I heard a bang and my bed shook. I thought it was another explosion,” said Tracy, referring to the home explosion that occurred on East Atlantic Avenue Nov. 7.
The fire was extinguished though there was “significant damage to the garage,” said Harron. “The Cape May County Fire Marshal came out and determined the cause of the fire was a faulty wood stove.”
