SOUTH DENNIS — The Dennis Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to a structure fire amidst a strong storm at 676 Route 47 at approximately 9:10 p.m. on Thur, July 7, 2011.
Engine 1838 was just clearing from a call at the nearby ARC of Cape May County’s Route 47 offices for a general fire alarm, and responded to the scene of the fire. Upon arrival, firefighters reported smoke to be showing from a home at the rear of Stites’ Landscaping, and immediately stretched an attack line and advanced it into the building.
Command requested a full mutual aid response from Station 17 (Ocean View) and Station 74 (Goshen). Engine 1835 responded to the scene and dropped approximately 800 feet of four-inch supply hose down the driveway leading to the structure, and Tanker 1843 staged at Route 47 to supply water, if needed.
Firefighters made an aggressive attack on the fire, containing it to a small portion of one room in the structure. Smoke was extensive throughout the building, and crews remained on location for some time as ventilation of the structure took place. A strong storm moved through the area during the course of the incident, prompting command to order all firefighters inside a vehicle or structure for precautionary measures.
In addition to Engine 1838, Engine 1835, and Tanker 1843, Rescue 1872 and Command 1812 also responded to the scene. Squad 22 (Belleplain Emergency) responded to the scene to provide medical treatment, if needed. Station 19 (Seaville) was requested by Station 17 to cover their district, and responded to one incident along with another Station 17 apparatus while covering.
The Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene, and is investigating the incident, which is believed to be caused by a lightning strike to a close proximity, or directly to the structure.
The New Jersey State Police also responded to the scene and are investigating.
Troopers also detoured drivers at the intersection of Route 47 and Court House-So. Dennis Road during the course of the incident.
