Deck Fire Results in Minimal Building Damage

By Press Release

WILDWOOD – The Wildwood City Fire Department Engine Company 38, under the command of Captain Grauel, along with North Wildwood Fire Department Engine Company 2, responded to 148 East Davis Avenue for a reported structure fire at 4:12 a.m. May 14.
The fire was reported by Patrolman Stevens while on patrol. He quickly requested the fire department, evacuated residents from the second floor apartment and used a fire extinguisher from the building to keep the fire in check prior to the fire departments’ arrival. Firefighters arrived and found fire on a second floor deck area and quickly extinguished the fire with minimal damage to the building.
Fire units operated on scene for about an hour. There were no reported injuries.
The fire was investigated by the City of Wildwood Fire Department and was determined to be accidental (discarded smoking material). Damage is estimated at $2,000. Fire damage was minimal due to the quick response of Patrolman Stevens and firefighters. Because of Patrolman Stevens’ quick actions, especially due to the time of the incident, certain civilian casualties were averted.
We would like to remind residents and visitors to please be mindful of discarded smoke materials. The Wildwood City Fire Department has recently responded to a half-dozen fires involving decks or porches where the fire is believed to be caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
