SWAINTON — A fire completely destroyed a motor home at the Big Timber Lake Camping Resort on Sun., July 23.
The Middle Township Fire Department responded to a call at 9:18 p.m. The motor home, owned by a vacationing couple from Quebec, was declared uninhabitable.
The source of the inferno has been attributed to a propane leak. “The tanks did not explode,” said Chip Menz, co-owner of Big Timber Lake. “There was a propane leak. The fire marshals think it was going into the refrigerator.” He added that if the propane tanks had exploded the fire would have consumed more properties than just the motor home.
“When we showed up, the fire appeared to be at the rear of the motor home,” said K.P. Arenberg, Fire Commissioner for the Cape May Court House Fire Department. “We’re still waiting for the fire marshal’s report.
“It could have been much worse than it was,” said Menz. “The response time from the fire departments was fantastic. They were here right away, probably within ten minutes, and they kept the fire from spreading.”
Over 25 firefighters from Cape May Court House, Ocean View, and Stone Harbor were on the scene. “The response time from the firefighters was amazing that night,” said Arenberg. “You have to think that we are all volunteers and to see a response like that was amazing.”
Coupled with a quick response from the firefighters was the response from the employees at the campground. “When we pulled in there we had employees lining the path, guiding us to the fire,” said Arenberg.
“The motor home is totaled,” said Menz, “but the good thing is no one got hurt.”
