CAPE MAY — Five full time firefighters received their oath at a City Council meeting here March 6.
“We have been fortunate to employ four new firefighters/EMTs in the career fire department to ensure the continued first class, professional service that the city has rendered for decades,” said Mayor Edward J. Mahaney Jr.
Four of the firefighters worked for the city on a part time basis for a number of years, he said. Mahaney noted the firefighters were fully trained.
He said the four full time firefighters bring on a “new era” that will support the existing staff in place of career and volunteer personnel.
Cape May Fireman/EMT Michael Eck was promoted to lieutenant following years of experience with the department and “excellent service,” said the mayor.
Firefighters/EMTs Timothy Gay, William Szemcsak, David Jackson and Alex Toler received their oath from Deputy City Clerk Louise Cummiskey, accompanied by their family members.
Chief Jerry Inderwies Jr. said he was fortunate to work with an excellent group of individuals and the city was fortunate to have their services.
“I’ve seen it work, it saves lives,” he said.
Inderwies said he hoped the firefighters would enjoy their 25 years of service as much as he had enjoyed his years of service.
Friends and family of the firefighters filled City Hall Auditorium for the ceremony.
