Campground Fire Heavily Damages Trailer

By Al Campbell

COURT HOUSE — Court House, Rio Grande and Stone Harbor firefighters along with Middle Township rescue units responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls from Shellbay Campground, 227 W. Shellbay Ave. at 9:41 a.m. Thur., June 2 for a structure fire at one of the sites.
When first units arrived from Court House Fire Department, they found a trailer about 12 feet by 33 feet in length feet, engulfed. They quickly extinguished the blaze, which was a mobile home located near the front of the property. The unit was unoccupied, but a neighbor, George Ruhl, 73, had attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose. He was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center by Middle Township Rescue for evaluation.
The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, but is under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office. Those personnel are being assisted by the department’s Major Crimes Unit.
In addition to the firefighters, personnel from the American Red Cross responded.
