WILDWOOD CREST – Several hundred law enforcement officers on bicycles joined the Police Unity Tour May 10. They stopped in Sea Isle City and Wildwood Crest on the way to Washington and the national memorial ceremony for fallen police officers.
In Sea Isle City, they remembered Officer Michael Cullinane Sr., of that city’s police department who died Aug. 26, 1992, attempting to save an unconscious worker in a construction pit.
In Wildwood Crest, they heard Wildwood Crest Police Capt. Robert Lloyd memorialize Officer Eugene Miglio, who lost his life in the line of duty there on June 2, 1995.
Listening was Barbara Miglio, widow of Officer Miglio, daughter Sgt. Anna Miglio, N.J. Department of Corrections, and his sister Donna Miglio Burns.
After the tribute at Miglio’s memorial on Sunset Lake, the caravan of bicyclists headed into an 18 mph head wind on their way to the Cape May-Lewes Ferry.
Police Unity Tour Chapter 2 President Bernard Tennant, New Jersey State Police, had the role of local fallen officers to be read.
Corrections Officer Fred Baker, N.J. Department of Corrections, slain July 30, 1997, at Bayside State Prison, was memorialized. His widow, Kelly Baker, and son, Jason Baker, New Jersey State Police, were recognized by the group.
A few hours earlier, at the Cape May County Public Safety Training Center grounds, Cape May County observed the annual Law Enforcement Memorial.
Wildwood Police Chief Robert Regalbuto, president, Cape May County Chiefs of Police Association, presided over the event. He urged the recruits, lined up by classes, to remember what they learned in the academy and to always wear their bulletproof vests and seat belts while on duty.
Other speakers included Freeholder Vice-Director Leonard Desiderio, Sen. Jeff Van Drew and Assemblyman Bruce Land (both D-1st), and Michael Francis, representing U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-2nd).
Pastor Scott Durbin, of Cape Fellowship Church, and police chaplain, offered the invocation and Benediction.
There, observed by recruits from the Cape May County Police Academy, police officers, and elected officials, wreaths were placed, and the names of six officers who died in the line of duty were recited.
The U.S. Coast Guard Ceremonial Detail rendered a three-volley salute, and a musician played “Taps.”
