Explore whether Lincoln visited Cape May

By On Deck Staff

Did Abe Lincoln ever visit Cape May? Or has history really been honoring instead a Jewish grocer named Abel Lincoln from Philadelphia who vacationed here?
And how about President James Buchanan, Robert E. Lee and Louisa May Alcott? Did they ever set foot on Cape May soil, as local legend has sometimes implied?
These questions will be explored by veteran newsman Jacob Schaad in a reading of excerpts from his new book, “No Time To Retire,” on Saturday, September 6, at 2 p.m. at the Lower Township branch of the county’s library at 2600 Bayshore Road, Villas, in the municipal complex.
Schaad’s book traces his 68 years in journalism, starting on September 2, 1939, the day after Hitler invaded Poland. (Four days before his book reading and signing he will mark his 69th anniversary in journalism although the book covers only the period ending in 2007 because of publication deadlines.) The Lower Township resident began his career at the Paterson Evening News and when he and his family moved to Cape May in 1981 he wrote for several newspapers, mostly the Gazette Leader publications where he explored the history of the Lincoln and other legends. He spent some time at the Library of Congress in the nation’s capital, researching the background of the alleged visits.
Schaad also will read excerpts in which he compares today’s journalism with that of his earlier days as a newspaperman. He questions whether journalism should have it own ethics committees, such as the legal and medical professions do, and whether press photographers should be allowed in the courtroom, as they are in New Jersey but not jn federal courts.
The reading will be part of a series that Schaad is holding throughout New Jersey. It is free and the public is invited.
